Kevin P Gallagher, MS, LCMHC, NCC, became a counselor after trying his hand as an elementary school teacher, a stockbroker and an investment banker. For almost 20 years, he has been working as a counselor providing services to adults, families, couples and adolescents. Kevin’s clinical orientation is a combination of cognitive-behavioral theory, Bowen Family Systems Theory, and Narrative Therapy.
Kevin received his undergraduate degree in Child Study from Tufts University in Massachusetts , and his graduate degree in Counseling from the University of Vermont , where he currently hold adjunct faculty status. Kevin was one of the original founders of [Op.ti.ma], which was designed to be a very inclusive practice of counselors and social workers, serving the general public as well as individuals/families that are under-represented in the community, such as people living with HIV, gay/lesbian/bi-sexual/transgender persons, blended families, and people of color.
As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Kevin has worked in a variety of settings, ranging from drug and alcohol prevention work with teens, consulting with organizations and businesses, and teaching. Kevin is also a presenter on a number of current issues relating to optimal mental health in our communities, schools, and families. He has presented regionally as well as nationally, and enjoys the opportunity to both educate and excite his audiences.
Currently, Kevin is on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Chittenden County. Just prior, Kevin was a Director on the Board of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), which is the nation’s premier professional certification board devoted to credentialing counselors who meet standards for general and specialty counseling practices, and has 42,000 certified counselors around the world. He is the former Chair of the State of Vermont Board of Allied Mental Health Practitioners, which is the state’s regulatory body for allied mental health fields, a position he was appointed to by then Governor Howard Dean. He has served as President of the Vermont Counseling Association (VCA), as Treasurer of the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB), and Secretary of the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE).
